United Airlines loves to grab headlines with flashy long-haul flights to exotic international spots on giant wide-body jets. But every now and then, the Chicago-based carrier turns its focus inward, giving smaller American cities a serious boost.
Fresh off restoring flights to Moab, Utah, United is shifting its focus back to the East Coast. The airline just locked in four key regional routes out of its massive Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) hub, bringing a mix of brand-new connections and long-awaited returns to cities across Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Nebraska.
The New Flight Lineups
Starting September 24, United Express will kick off these four routes using a mix of sleek regional jets equipped with two-class cabins:
- Charlottesville, Virginia (CHO): Daily service on a Bombardier CRJ550.
- Knoxville, Tennessee (TYS): Twice-daily service on a Bombardier CRJ550.
- Bentonville, Arkansas (XNA): Daily flights on an Embraer 175.
- Omaha, Nebraska (OMA): Daily flights on an Embraer 175.
What This Means for Local Travelers
A Brand-New Gateway for Central Virginia
The nonstop link to Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Airport (CHO) is the only completely fresh route on this list. Up until now, United passengers flying out of Charlottesville were mostly limited to hopping over to Washington Dulles (IAD) on a quick hop or connecting through Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
Adding a direct line into Newark gives Central Virginia locals effortless access to the New York metro area and opens up a massive web of international connections. Beyond business travel, it’s a big win for tourism—putting travelers right at the doorstep of the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, and the Blue Ridge Mountains (where window-seat passengers can catch incredible views during takeoff and landing).
Reconnecting Lost Links
While Charlottesville gets a brand-new toy, the other three routes mark the welcome return of service that had fallen by the wayside in recent years:
- Bentonville (XNA): United last ran direct flights between Newark and Northwest Arkansas in 2022. Getting this route back is huge for corporate travel, especially given the massive business footprint of Walmart’s global headquarters in the area.
- Knoxville (TYS) & Omaha (OMA): Direct service to both Tennessee and Nebraska was drawn back in 2020 as the pandemic destroyed airline schedules nationwide. Retrieving back these flights retrieves a crucial bridge between the Midwest, the South, and the Northeast corridor.
Smart Planes for Smart Routes
United isn’t just throwing any old regional planes at these markets. The Bombardier CRJ550s heading to Charlottesville and Knoxville are designed for a premium feel, featuring a dedicated First Class cabin, generous closet space for carry-ons, and a self-serve snack bar. Meanwhile, the roomy Embraer 175s will handle the longer cross-country stretches to Omaha and Bentonville with ease.
By plugging these gaps and restoring proven routes, United is making Newark a lot more practical for travelers in smaller markets—proving that you don’t need a massive wide-body jet to make a big difference in local travel.
