Taking off from Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, I recently had the chance to step inside the brand-new Riyadh Air Hafawa Lounge. The Saudi flag carrier, backed heavily by the Public Investment Fund, only kicked off commercial flights a few weeks back. Flying business class out to Madrid provided the perfect excuse to check out what they have put together. It is exceptionally rare for a brand-new airline to launch alongside a fully realized, top-tier flagship space on day one, but this release genuinely sets a high standard.
Spanning 2,000 square meters (roughly 21,500 square feet) with room for up to 370 visitors, the space easily ranks among the finest business class lounges globally. From an aesthetic standpoint, the interior styling comfortably rivals Cathay Pacific’s world-renowned aesthetic. The layout is smartly organized into distinct zones geared toward resting, social gathering, dining, or interacting with immersive digital setups. Drawing clear inspiration from the natural Saudi landscape, every element from the ambient lighting and soundtrack down to the accessibility of charging stations feels carefully curated. Because the airline is still scaling up its operational fleet, the lounge currently feels like a serene, quiet oasis compared to the usual overcrowded airport hubs.
The culinary program is another highlight that easily competes with premier international lounges. Guests are greeted with an extensive self-serve buffet featuring artfully presented cold items and eight high-quality hot dishes. Beyond the main buffet line, there is a full à la carte menu service where travelers are encouraged to enjoy a full three-course sit-down meal. This layout works remarkably well for overnight or early-morning long-haul departures, allowing passengers to eat well on the ground and maximize sleep once airborne.
There is also a café area with barista-made coffee, fresh tea, and pastries. At the main bar, you can try creative non-alcoholic drinks, including a special mocktail called the “Lavender Haze.” The lounge does not serve alcohol anywhere. While some international travelers might prefer wine or cocktails, the current food and drink options are still excellent.
The lounge also offers several ways to relax. If you need privacy, there are quiet rooms with doors. You can use massage chairs to ease pre-flight stress, and there are private shower suites to freshen up before your flight.
Riyadh Air has made a strong impression with the Hafawa Lounge. With its smart design, great food, and excellent amenities, it sets a high standard for what travelers can look forward to from this airline.
