Southwest Unveils 2:45 AM “Reverse Red-Eye” to Honolulu 

Flying to paradise at 2:45 AM sounds like a sleep-deprived fever dream, but Southwest Airlines has officially scheduled its first-ever “reverse redeye” from Las Vegas (LAS) to Honolulu (HNL).

While westbound overnight flights are notoriously brutal on passenger sleep schedules, the airline is betting that aircraft efficiency and early-morning island arrivals will win over budget travelers.

Flight Schedule & What to Expect

  • Departure: 2:45 AM local time out of Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
  • Arrival: 6:10 AM local time at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu.
  • Total Flight Time: 6 hours, 25 minutes.
  • The Cabin Reality: Unlike Hawaiian Airlines, which operates a similar 1:55 AM departure with lie-flat first-class suites, this route runs on a standard single-cabin Southwest Boeing 737.

Why It Sucks for Travelers

Leaving at nearly 3:00 AM means boarding when your body clock wants to be in deep sleep. To make matters worse, landing in Hawaii at 6:10 AM leaves you stranded with a full day ahead before standard hotel check-in times (usually 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM), unless you pay for an extra night upfront.

It boils down to aircraft utilization:

  1. Zero Wasted Ground Time: Rather than letting a 737 sit idle on the tarmac in Las Vegas overnight, Southwest keeps the plane earning revenue.
  2. Immediate Morning Turnaround: The aircraft lands in Honolulu just after dawn and can immediately turn around to operate a prime, highly sought-after morning flight back to the U.S. mainland, without needing to pay for overnight aircraft parking in Hawaii.

This schedule isn’t designed for a restful start to a vacation, but it offers a full extra day in Hawaii for travelers willing to power through severe jet lag. If you decide to book this route, make sure to coordinate an early hotel check-in or pack a day bag so you can drop your luggage and head straight to the beach while you wait for your room.
